Now, after 18 years of working with pregnant mums, post-partum mums, babies and children of all ages, she is not only up to the job of supporting mom as their chiropractor and natural pregnancy mentor but she thrives on the energy that this role brings to her life as well as to the practice. As a practitioner of the Webster technique and full member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) she stays current with the latest research and techniques associated with pregnancy, birth and raising vibrant healthy children.
Tips to Stay In Top Shape During Your Pregnancy
By Dr. Marie-Claude Lambert of Loving Life Chiropractic
I love having a practice filled with pregnant women, babies and children but the fact is I am not an “Earth Mother” or the type of women that loves giving birth. In fact I found it tough.
However, I was blessed to have my 2 girls at home with a great mid-wife team in attendance, and I vividly remember that the run up to the birth was no walk in the park. Here are a few of the things I recommend to my pregnant ladies to keep their structure and function optimised and to maximise the development potential of their unborn child:
- Exercise. At a moderate intensity for 15-20 minutes this keeps your brain and your baby’s brain fully oxygenated. Swimming, water aerobics, walking, yoga and low impact aerobics classes designed for pregnancy are ideal. Stay hydrated. Exercise reduces medical intervention (24% less c-sections, 14% less forceps), gives more energy, rest and less weight gain. Contraindications include things like high blood pressure, vaginal bleeding, anaemia.
- Reactivate your core muscles by doing pelvic range of motion exercises while sitting on an exercise ball. Also strengthen your pelvic floor muscles whether or not you intend to have a vaginal birth. Kegels, squats, bridge and bird-dog are excellent pelvic floor exercises.
- Maintain good posture. There are several simple posture exercises to bring your shoulder back and prevent exaggerated lower back curve (duck waddle!).
- Get checked by your chiropractor before during and after pregnancy. This helps reduce pelvic unlevelling and makes for safer, easier births. (24-39% shorter labour). It can also help reduce pregnancy discomforts such as nausea, heartburn, constipation etc. In studies the Webster Technique had an 82% success rate at helping breech babies turn and was shown to give safer easier births.
